The Role of Support Systems When Considering Abortion

You’ve likely never considered the power of two thin lines on a pregnancy test before they appeared on yours. Maybe you’re unexpectedly pregnant and abortion feels like the only logical answer to this new situation in which you find yourself.

An abortion decision can feel like something you have to carry entirely by yourself, even when people around you would want to help if they knew.

Before doing anything else, pause. Take a deep breath. There are a few things you should do before making your final decision, and one of those is making sure you have a great support system to help you navigate it.

Vera Women’s Center offers free, confidential pregnancy confirmation appointments to provide the answers you need to begin evaluating your next steps. Schedule a no-cost appointment to talk with someone today.

What Research Shows About Support and Well-Being

Research on pregnancy and mental health has consistently found that social support is associated with fewer mental health symptoms, while isolation is associated with more difficulty.

This pattern held across support from partners, family, and friends alike. Experiences vary from person to person, and having support doesn’t guarantee an easy decision, but it does mean you don’t have to navigate the decision–and what happens next–by yourself.

Telling Someone You Trust

It may be helpful to identify at least one person–your partner, a friend, a family member, a member of your faith community–who you could talk to honestly.

If that feels impossible right now, Vera Women’s Center’s client advocates can serve as that first person. Our Education & Material Aid program connects you to community resources and, if you’d like, can connect your partner with mentoring and group support of his own.

If You’re Feeling Pressured

If a partner or family member is pressuring you toward a decision you don’t want to make, or you don’t feel safe expressing your own thoughts, help is available. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 800-799-7233, 24 hours a day.

If telling a partner feels unsafe, plan on doing it in a public place, with a friend present, or by phone instead of in person.
