Medical Abortion (The Abortion Pill)
Medical abortion uses two drugs taken in sequence and is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of pregnancy.
The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, which the pregnancy needs to continue. The second drug, misoprostol, causes uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy, producing cramping and bleeding.
Common side effects include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fever and chills
- Diarrhea
- Headache
Risks include:
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Incomplete abortion, where pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus and requires a follow-up procedure
- Ongoing pregnancy if the drugs fail
Because most of this process happens at home, knowing which symptoms require emergency care before you start matters.
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion is performed in a clinic or hospital using suction and instruments to remove the pregnancy. The complexity of the procedure increases as the pregnancy progresses.
Common side effects include cramping and light spotting or bleeding.
Risks include:
- Uterine perforation, where an instrument creates a hole in the uterine wall
- Cervical injury
- Scar tissue inside the uterus, which can affect future fertility
- Infection

Gestational age and pregnancy location directly affect which procedures are available. An ectopic pregnancy, where the pregnancy develops outside the uterus, cannot be addressed with abortion and requires urgent, separate medical treatment.
