Finding out you’re pregnant while you’re still in high school or college can make your normal routine suddenly feel much more complicated. You may be wondering how you’ll keep up with classes, what you’ll tell your family, or whether graduation is still possible.
Rather than trying to answer every question at once, start by finding out what resources are available. Vera Women’s Center can help you look at timelines, scholarships, housing, and other needs related to pregnancy and parenting.
Schedule an appointment today to meet with a client advocate and begin putting together a plan that fits your circumstances.
Find Out What You Need From School
Pregnancy can affect your school day in ways you may not anticipate. Medical appointments, fatigue, nausea, or other pregnancy-related needs could interfere with attendance or assignments.
Speak with the appropriate person at your school about pregnancy-related policies and academic adjustments. If your school receives federal funding, Title IX protects students from discrimination based on pregnancy or related conditions.
You may also want to ask how pregnancy-related absences, missed assignments, physical education requirements, and time away for childbirth are handled.
Make a Plan for the Rest of the School Year
Pull out your school calendar and look at the months ahead. When are major exams? When does the semester end? How does your due date fit into the academic year?
You won’t be able to predict exactly how pregnancy will unfold, of course. The goal is to identify potential conflicts early enough to ask questions and make arrangements.
During an appointment at Vera, your client advocate can help you look at timelines as well as scholarships, housing, and other resources that may support your plans.
Think About Who Can Help
Support can be specific. A parent might provide transportation to appointments. Your partner could help with baby supplies. A friend may share class notes when you’re absent.
Think about the people in your life and what you might feel comfortable asking them to do. If your current support system is limited, community resources can fill some of those gaps.
Vera can also provide referrals for healthcare, counseling, housing, childcare, job training, and other services. We’re here to help you feel as confident and prepared as possible.
Prepare for Parenting While Continuing School
If you’re planning to parent, learning basic skills before your baby arrives can make the transition easier.
Vera offers prenatal and parenting classes covering subjects such as newborn care, bonding, safe sleep, feeding, stress management, and budgeting. Spanish-language classes are also available, along with bilingual client advocates.
Through participation in classes, you can earn credits to use toward items in Vera’s boutique, including diapers, wipes, formula, clothing, and hygiene products. Additional material assistance may be available through community partners.
Keep Working Toward Your Goals
Being pregnant in high school or college may require new plans, but you can still think seriously about graduation, college, job training, and the future you want to build.
Schedule an appointment with Vera Women’s Center today. We can help you identify your immediate needs, find useful resources, and begin making plans for both school and pregnancy.
