Pregnant in High School or College?
Balancing classes, work, finances, and relationships is hard enough. Adding a possible pregnancy can feel complicated, and you might question where to go from here. At ABC Pregnancy Care Center, you’ll find no-cost, confidential support to help you understand your options and keep moving toward your goals.
Know Your Rights & Resources
First, know that no one has the right to force you to make a specific pregnancy decision, including abortion. Even if you’re a minor, you have the right to explore your options without feeling pressured or coerced.
Pregnant and parenting students have protections in school settings.
Title IX is a federal civil rights law that protects pregnant (and parenting) students from harassment and discrimination. Any school or university receiving federal funds must comply with this law.
This law states that, among other things, your school must:
- Allow you to continue participating in classes and extracurricular activities
- Provide you with reasonable adjustments (i.e., more frequent restroom trips) because of your pregnancy
- Not require a doctor’s note for hospitalization after childbirth (unless the school requires a note from all students hospitalized for physical or emotional conditions)
- Provide excused absences for pregnancy and childbirth
We’ll help you understand the accommodations you may be entitled to and how to talk with professors or advisors. Our client advocates can also connect you with on-campus and community resources for childcare, counseling, healthcare, and other resources.
Start with Pregnancy Confirmation
Begin with medical-grade urine tests and, if eligible, a limited ultrasound (transvaginal or abdominal) to learn your pregnancy’s gestational age, location, and viability. Clear information helps you evaluate abortion information, adoption, or parenting in a respectful, pressure-free environment.
Plan Next Steps That Fit Your Life
During your appointment, your client advocate will help you consider timelines, scholarships, housing, and other resources, as well as how your partner, friends, or family can support you. We also offer prenatal and parenting classes, material aid, and community resource referrals.
You’re Not Alone in This
Your education matters, and with a plan and the right people in your corner, you can keep moving forward.
